JOB DESCRIPTION: CURATORIAL ASSISTANT
The Mayne Island Agricultural Society* is seeking a self-motivated summer student to work at the Museum for summer 2025. The job is 9 weeks from June 23 -August 31 2025 (exact dates to be negotiated), $28.00/ hour.
CURATORIAL ASSISTANT - MAYNE ISLAND MUSEUM
Under the direction of the Museum Curator, responsibilities will include but not limited to visitor services and interpretation in the Museum and at the historic site, artifact cataloguing, research and documentation, conservation cleaning and monitoring of artifacts; exhibit development and installation. Additional opportunities exist to be involved in assisting in organizing the Mayne Island Agricultural Fair and the Japanese Canadian Legacy project. As well the Curatorial Assistant will be expected to define a research project with the potential outcome of a short article for publication. This is an exciting position for a post-secondary student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts, Community Planning, Cultural Resource Management, Indigenous and/or Museum Studies.
The duties will include:
• Maintaining conservation standards at the Museum including conservation cleaning, artifact preservation and collections management and artifact database data entry.
• Artifact inventory, cataloguing and documentation including historical research.
• Provide guided tours, event delivery and other visitor services duties,
• Assisting with exhibition upgrades, design and fabrication.
• Assisting in organizing and delivery of the Mayne Island Fall Fair
• Assisting in the development of interpretive signage for outdoor exhibits through the ŚTEṈIST ȻENTOL EȻSIÁ TĆÁNȻE / Walking Forward with the Past Indigenous reconciliation project.
• Assisting with research for the Mayne Island Japanese Canadian Legacy project.
• Researching and compiling information from long time island residents on the history of the island
• Assisting with administrative and other duties as required to maintain the daily operation of the Museum and historic site
Qualifications:
• Must be returning to school in the fall (required)
• Demonstrated education in general arts or sciences, history or related studies. University level education an asset.
• Working knowledge of computer software including Word, Excel, Access and photo editing software. Previous experience with collections management software and photography an asset.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Good public relations skills including an ability to provide quality customer service
• Driver’s License preferred

• Knowledge of local, BC and Canadian history or work in a museum or historic site or tourism site an asset.
Preference will be given to youth with disability, aboriginal youth, visible minorities and new Canadians.
