"Redaction" explored in new paintings by Amy Modahl

Amy Modahl: Redactions

November 2, 2024 to January 12, 2025

October 30, 2024 - Kelowna, BC: The word "redaction" may conjure up images straight out of a spy movie, perhaps of a top-secret document that has been censored with black ink. A painting might not be the first thing that comes to mind, but this is how Salmon Arm-based artist Amy Modahl has chosen to explore some of the ideas evoked. Her solo exhibition of paintings titled Redactions opens at the Kelowna Art Gallery this weekend.

"Redactions features a fascinating new series of paintings that weave themes of language and visual expression," says Christine May, Curator at the Kelowna Art Gallery. "The works showcase Modahl's exploration of abstract graphic elements which creates a rich and layered visual experience for visitors to delve into."

Viewers will encounter works like 8 feet of my diary, redacted-a sprawling work on paper that true to its title, features layered pen, pencil, ink, and white-out on eight feet of paper. We were young then gives the impression of a written page that has been heavily blacked out and then smudged further obscuring the text to an illegible state. Hints of what might have been the blue-lined paper the text was originally written on, bleed through the overlay. Through these works, Redactions invites viewers to immerse themselves in this visual narrative, encouraging deeper contemplation of language, materiality, and the art of expression.

Amy Modahl works in painting, drawing, stop-motion animation, and performance. Born in Minnesota, she now lives and works in Salmon Arm. She holds an Interdisciplinary MFA in Visual Art from UBC Okanagan, an MA in Applied Linguistics from Northern Arizona University, and a BA in Fine Art, Art History, & Spanish from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. Her contributions to the arts were recently recognized with the 2023 Tanabe Award for mid-career artists, shared with emerging artist Robin Hodgson.

An opening reception for the exhibition is planned for November 1, 2024, from 6 to 8 pm. The artist will be in attendance. This event is free and open to the public to attend.

Amy Modahl: Redactions is on view at the Kelowna Art Gallery from November 2, 2024 to January 12, 2025.

The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315 Water Street in the heart of Kelowna's Culture District. For more information visit kelownaartgallery.com or call 250-762-2226.
