</span></b><span style="font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">The word “redaction” may conjure up images straight out of a spy movie, perhaps of a top-secret document that has been censored with black ink. A painting might not be the first thing
that comes to mind, but this is how Salmon Arm-based artist <b>Amy Modahl</b> has chosen to explore some of the ideas evoked. Her solo exhibition of paintings titled
<i>Redactions</i> opens at the Kelowna Art Gallery this weekend.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">“<i>Redactions</i> features a fascinating new series of paintings that weave themes of language and visual expression,” says
<b>Christine May</b>, Curator at the Kelowna Art Gallery. “The works showcase Modahl’s exploration of abstract graphic elements which creates a rich and layered visual experience for visitors to delve into.”<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Viewers will encounter works like
<i>8 feet of my diary, redacted</i>—a sprawling work on paper that true to its title, features layered pen, pencil, ink, and white-out on eight feet of paper.
<i>We were young then</i> gives the impression of a written page that has been heavily blacked out and then smudged further obscuring the text to an illegible state. Hints of what might have been the blue-lined paper the text was originally written on, bleed
through the overlay. Through these works, <i>Redactions</i> invites viewers to immerse themselves in this visual narrative, encouraging deeper contemplation of language, materiality, and the art of expression.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"><b><span style="font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Amy Modahl</span></b><span style="font-size:13.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"> works in painting, drawing, stop-motion animation, and performance. Born in
Minnesota, she now lives and works in Salmon Arm. She holds an Interdisciplinary MFA in Visual Art from UBC Okanagan, an MA in Applied Linguistics from Northern Arizona University, and a BA in Fine Art, Art History, & Spanish from St. Cloud State University
in Minnesota. Her contributions to the arts were recently recognized with the 2023 Tanabe Award for mid-career artists, shared with emerging artist Robin Hodgson.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
