Speaker Series: Safeguarding Chinese Canadian History

This is your last chance to register before the long weekend! Grab a spot in the free webinar next week. There will be no recording, but you can join us online, for free on Wednesday, April 3rd at 12PM PST.

As opposition to colonialism grows, statues like Gassy Jack's have been forcibly removed, and institutions are re-examining their practices to include more diverse perspectives. How can we guarantee truthful and respectful storytelling? This session will examine how can we ensure the empowerment of Chinese Canadian histories in British Columbia. First, we’ll examine the concept of safeguarding and provide a deconstruction of the term and the concept of Chinese Canadian history. Secondly, Ms. Fong will offer some examples of case studies that highlight oral history and intangible heritage in museum contexts. Finally, we’ll discuss what skills and resources are needed and available to do this work.
