[BCMA] Filming Guidelines for Historic Properties

Hi Kirsten,

   We here have had a few small film crews come through and do their thing.  Except for one they all were a local people who used our space for background scenes and filmed around a table or local boys who have their own production company who borrowed our space for specific scenes.

   We have never drawn up any documents to use but we always have staff available during filming as our facility was still open to public. The staff checked in during the filming to make sure all was going well and dealt with things that needed to be looked at.  Our luck has been that the local people, doing the filming, co-operate with us or they could get a bad wrap and word will get around.

   Before anyone shows up, days before, I always go over with the film people: where they will be, what are they doing, what do they need for artifacts in the scenes, what don’t they need (so I can remove them), what equipment will be used and where in the building will the equipment be, what times will they be needing the building(s), who will all be involved (how many people in a small space).

   Our first filming, we had a group wanted to film the first meeting of the Rod and Gun club for their 100th Anniversary.  They didn’t need much but I moved a display cabinet to the side so they could get around the whole table, but they filmed in Feb. so having no heat in the building they had to overcome that problem by setting up heaters hours before filming; then, we only have one plug-in in the building.  That got me aware of how we need to be active when film crews come in, no matter how professional.

We’re in discussions about having a movie filmed on our historic site (sawmill site with housing).  Does anyone have filming guidelines they’re willing to share, or suggested resources?

 

I’m thinking about restrictions or any other matters that should be discussed with the film company, particularly with regards to the protection of the historic resource.
