Join VHF for an in-person Professional Development Day in partnership with Nikkei National Museum's Carolyn Nakagawa, the Japanese Canadian Hastings Park Interpretive Centre Society and civic historian John Atkin! We are excited to invite teachers and educators to explore Hastings Park’s varied histories and the site of the 1942 Japanese Canadian detainment in a three-part session on October 21st.

In 1942, following Canada's declaration of War on Japan, Hastings Park was used to temporarily house Japanese Canadians who were being removed from their homes along the BC Coast. Approximately 8,000 people were detained in the livestock buildings at Hastings Park before being sent to internment sites and work camps across the country.

Morning and afternoon walking tours are available separately with a special lunchtime session inside the Livestock Building. All proceeds go to support VHF’s Heritage in Schools Program.

When: Friday, October 21st, 9am-3pm (tours will run in the morning and afternoon)
Where: Hastings Park
Price: $60+tax for full day or $30+ tax for 1 half-day tour

Join developer Joe Carreira, architect Taizo Yamamoto and heritage consultant Elana Zysblat as they share the story of this unconventional project, which they saw as an innovative solution to the challenge of preserving the history and built heritage of the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood, while appealing to the needs of a community known to be a catalyst of industry and innovation. This new and unique strata office, commercial and industrial mixed-use building, developed by Conwest Group, boldly incorporates the 1901 heritage house that stood previously on the site as the focal point of its design.

This lunchtime talk will touch upon the complex decision and design process, which involved lots of engagement and consultation with stakeholders, the logistical challenges of moving, storing and re-storing the heritage house off site, along with the quest to find relevant new uses and meaning for a modest old-timer house that dared to survive on a block that had long transformed into an industrial area.

When: Thursday, November 3rd, 12pm - 1pm
Where: Online
Price: $15, $9 for students
