Job Description: 

Regular work week: Wednesday to Saturday, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm (the
successful candidate must be able to work weekends and some evenings) 

Museum Open Hours (All Year): Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00am to 3:00pm. 

The qathet Museum and Archives is located on the territory of the Tla'amin
Nation who have inhabited this land since time immemorial. 

The qathet Museum and Archives, formerly known as the Powell River
Historical Museum and Archives houses 260m2 of displays, including exhibits
on the Tla'amin Nation and Coast Salish culture, the Powell River Company
paper mill, homesteading on the Coast, and life in the community. The museum
collections include approximately 8,000 objects, and 500 biological
specimens. The archival collection contains over 175,000 images, 95 metres
of archival fonds, and 2,000 maps and blueprints. The Association also
administers the Forestry Museum, located nearby at Willingdon Beach, which
covers forestry operations from hand logging times through to the era of
chain saws. 

Working in the heritage field in Powell River is a rewarding experience, as
many aspects of Powell River's history make it unique. The Powell River
Company produced the first saleable roll of newsprint in British Colombia in
1912. Powell River is also home to the Townsite Historic District, composed
of over 400 historical buildings, including the Historic Patricia Theatre
which is the longest continuously operating theatre in Western Canada. 

Purpose of the Position:

The Visitor Services Assistant creates a welcoming atmosphere for visitors
at the museum. Primarily working at the front reception desk, the Visitor
Services Assistant is responsible for providing an exceptional visitor
experience to all patrons, while supporting areas of museum operations. In
addition, Visitor Services Assistant will address guest needs as they arise
and assist in the everyday running of the museum gift shop. The Visitor
Services Assistant will conduct research in the museum's collections to
complete research requests from the public. Moreover, the Visitor Services
Assistant will assist staff with programming, events and administrative
support tasks at the museum. This position requires good interpersonal
skills and the ability to multi-task and prioritize. 

Key Responsibilities: 

*         Responsible for museum reception, greeting the public, special
guests, members and groups in a cheerful, receptive manner at all times

*         Orients visitors to the museum and answers visitor inquiries

*         Monitors exhibits during public hours

*         Records visitor statistics and other relevant data

*         Maintains and updates membership records 

*         Assists with the completion of research requests, as well as
facilitating public research 

*         Assists in the running of the museum gift shop, processing
transactions, arranges and displays merchandise, and inventories stock

*         Assists the Program & Education Manager during programs and
special events, including ticket sales

*         Works alongside staff on other museum projects as requested

*         Minor cleaning and maintenance duties - dusting, sweeping,
sanitizing and supply restocking as required

.         Administrative duties

Qualifications:

*         Minimum 2 years of customer service

*         Preference given to candidates with a background in education,
tourism, museum studies, history, or a similar field.

*         Experience working or volunteering in a not-for-profit environment
is an asset.

*         Excellent interpersonal and administrative skills and a high
degree of professionalism, discretion and confidentiality.

*         Intermediate to advanced level of computer proficiency

*         Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills

*         Some spoken knowledge of French or other language would be an
asset

*         Appreciation for history, and an understanding of how it
intersects with and informs present-day lived experiences

*         Clear Criminal Background and Vulnerable Sector Checks

*         Valid First Aid Certification is considered an asset
