Languages are living organisms holding universes of thought, memory, and culture. They shape people, and people are shaped by the expressions, symbolism, and cultural weight carried in words. Within them lives one of the deepest expressions of our shared humanity. This event offers examples and encouragement to speakers and communities while supporting the maintenance, intergenerational transmission, documentation, and revitalization of languages.
The webinar will open with welcoming remarks by UNESCO Chair in Living Heritage and Sustainable Livelihoods at UNBC, David Schimpky (Director of Secretariat, Canadian Commission for UNESCO), followed by a plenary address by Dr. Yvonne Pierreroy, Dakelh Elder and Founding Member of the Carrier Linguistic Society. The event will conclude with a moderated panel discussion led by John Mainville (Aleza Lake Research Forest), featuring Elizabeth Alvarez Alfaro (Casa de las Américas Heritage Society), Erika Hernandez-Read (Northern BC Archives), and Amy Hagiwara (Japanese language Instructor at UNBC).
Preliminary Program and poster attached!
We hope you will join us in celebrating linguistic diversity and the living heritage carried through language. Please feel free to share this invitation widely within your networks.
Warm regards,
Agnieszka Pawłowska-Mainville

Lheidli T’enneh keyoh whust’i. I acknowledge the territory of the Lheidli T’enneh, the people whose name derives from relating to the place at confluence of the two rivers we today call Nechako and Fraser.
