FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Feb 25 2026
Caetani Centre Presents Recapitulation Reunited: A Historic Canadian
FirstExhibition
and Gala to celebrate the complete presentation of the Recapitulation
series in BC following acclaimed Rome exhibition.

VERNON, BC — “There are stories that…resonate with surprising
relevance…reflect with rare intensity the tensions and transformations of
an entire society.”

These were the words of Alessandro Guili, Italy’s Minister of Culture, upon
the opening of a feature exhibition of late Italian-Canadian artist Sveva
Caetani’s artwork in Rome in October 2025. This Canada-Italy partnership
was held up as an example of international cultural collaboration at a G8
meeting of world leaders

Now, this same powerful work is on its way home to Vernon, BC, to be
reunited for a historic Canadian first: an exhibition and gala featuring
Caetani’s complete Recapitulation series. This marks the return of
Caetani’s paintings from Italy, following the acclaimed exhibition at the
MAXXI National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome (Oct 2025 – Jan 2026).

>From April 3–11, 2026, Caetani Centre will exhibit the complete
Recapitulation series at the Coldstream Community Hall, making it a
landmark art exhibition in Coldstream BC and a highlight among North
Okanagan cultural events in 2026. This rare homecoming positions the
exhibition and gala among the most significant Okanagan culture events in
spring 2026 and a must-see art exhibition in the region.

Recapitulation Reunited marks the first time the entire series has been
exhibited all at once in Canada, offering residents and visitors seeking
things to do in Vernon BC in April 2026 an opportunity to experience an
internationally celebrated body of work.

As an important moment for not only the legacy of Sveva Caetani, but the
recognition of Canadian women artists and women artists in British
Columbia, the exhibition further strengthens Vernon BC’s reputation for
dynamic cultural programming and notable Vernon BC art events.

“Bringing Recapitulation Reunited home to Vernon after its international
presentation in Rome is both a celebration and a responsibility,” says
Laisha Rosnau, Executive Director of the Caetani Centre. “This exhibition
highlights the global impact of Sveva Caetani’s artwork, while reaffirming
our commitment to preserving the Caetani house and sharing her
extraordinary story with new generations.”

Created between 1978–1989, Recapitulation is recognized as one of the most
ambitious autobiographical achievements in Canadian art. Through vivid
symbolism and narrative detail, Caetani chronicles her journey from Italian
nobility and the complex Caetani family history to her artistic reawakening
in British Columbia.

The exhibition reinforces the significance of preserving the historic
Caetani Cultural Centre—also known locally as the Caetani house—where the
series was created. As a leading British Columbia art gallery destination
and cultural site, the Centre continues to shape the region’s artistic
identity.

“Hosting the complete series is a milestone for our city and for the
provincial arts sector,” says Teresa Durning, City of Vernon Councilor and
Director at Large with the Regional District of North Okanagan. “It
underscores the importance of supporting institutions like the Caetani
Centre that contribute meaningfully to cultural tourism and creative
economies throughout British Columbia.”

About Sveva Caetani and the Caetani Centre

The daughter of Leone Caetani, Prince of Teano and Duke of Sermoneta, Sveva
Caetani (1917–1994) was born in Rome and immigrated to Vernon BC, Canada
with her parents in 1921.

After years of isolation following her father’s death, she later attended
the University of Victoria and became an art teacher in the North Okanagan.
Her monumental watercolour series, Recapitulation, consisting of 47 scenes
comprising 60 paintings, remains one of the defining works in Canadian
autobiographical art.

Today, the Caetani Centre operates on the property that Sveva Caetani
called home for more than 70 years. Operated by the Caetani Cultural Centre
Society and owned by the City of Vernon, the Caetani Centre continues to
preserve Sveva’s legacy through exhibitions, residencies, public
programming and events, contributing significantly to the regional and
provincial arts and cultural landscape.
