Zena is right. HAMM in Courtenay is being forced to shut down the Veterans Memorial for HMCS ALBERNI because we have to move away from the homeless camp the City put next door to us. We don’t happen to have a spare $3 million to write the heritage building owner a cheque, so we applied for grants that would help us acquire the property. We were turned down immediately because none of us are paid. So I wrote to the top (Mark Carney) so it would trickle down to the correct ministries. I was complaining that smaller museums that have volunteer staff with experience and we small museums are struggling or (as in our case) have to close our doors. If we had the $70-90k for one of our salaries, we would have spent it on our current overhead instead. In the end, their final decision was to deny funding to keep us open.

Be sure to read the eligibility requirements for both Canada Summer Jobs and Young Canada Works carefully. They may have updated their eligibility, but I do know in previous application periods the organization must have a paid staff member in a supervisory role to qualify.

We express our gratitude at the privilege of living and working here. The TRMF has benefited greatly from this land and as such we reflect on our presence and practices, and hold space for better a future.
