Join us on November 16th 2:00 pm via Zoom for Blaire Mirau's upcoming talk on the the colourful history of Prince Rupert!
Explore the vibrant history of one of BC’s most storied small towns, and why the rainbow is the perfect metaphor to describe the unique community of Prince Rupert: a symbol of diversity and inclusion, a gateway between worlds, a universal sign of hope and calm after a storm, and yes, it rains a lot.
From its original Ts’mysen inhabitants to the first European explorers and fur traders, the building of dozens of salmon canneries to the construction of the transcontinental railway, the global upheaval of two World Wars to decades of industrial boom and bust, Kaien Island, and Prince Rupert, has always been a rich, multicultural trading hub that has weathered countless storms.
The author will also share insights into his research approach, and how specifically the local archival society, library, and a lot of microfilm were critical to the success of the writing process.
Blair Mirau is a born-and-raised Rupertite and former Prince Rupert City Councillor, elected as the youngest member of Council in the city’s history. He is the Director of Business Development for Gitxaala Enterprises, a local Indigenous Nation’s economic development arm. He also currently serves as the Chairperson of Tourism Prince Rupert and the Vice Chair of the Northern BC Tourism Association. From 2013 – 2024, Blair led the Gitmaxmak’ay Nisga’a, another Prince Rupert-based Indigenous community-owned corporation where he was recognized by BC Business as one of the province’s Top 30 Under 30 in 2018.

With a Masters Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Royal Roads University and a Bachelor’s Degree in International Development from the University of Winnipeg, Blair credits his high school English and History teachers with giving him the research and writing skills necessary to achieve his bucket list dream of publishing his own book.
