Hi Marina,
We, too, are a small underfunded Museum with a steadily declining
membership. Our working board (only 6 people now) opens for Heritage Week
(Feb. 17 - 22 this year) from noon - 4:00 p.m. each day. (We're usually
only open from May end to Sept start or when someone phones for a tour in
the off-season).
We use this opportunity to clean the Museum, adjust and tidy exhibits,
file, clean off the workroom table (stuff seems to pile up over the
winter), fill out paper work for donations of artefacts and archives, make
coffee and bring goodies and just have some social time (we don't share a
lot of interests outside the Museum, but enjoy each others' company on
occasions like these), tour any visitors through the Museum and then
invite them into the back room to socialize with us, have a regular monthly
meeting, and just do some odd-ball stuff. Considering this year's theme,
"Pastimes in Past Times", I think our approach will work quite nicely. I
can remember my "house wife" Mom, in the 50s, working her buns off to keep
the "perfect" house, but taking time at 10:00 a.m. each day to walk up the
street and meet with the other women for coffee and socializing. Then back
home she'd go to continue her day.
Sorry if this is a bit of a ramble - just what we do sometimes!!
Good luck,
Linda Hanson, Telkwa Museum Society
