Ithin-eh-wuk-we place ourselves at the center: James Nicholas and Sandra Semchuk
January 18 to April 19, 2025
Curated by Timothy Long
Artists collaborate on videos and photographs through a love story that transcends cultural divides at the Kamloops Art Gallery
Opening January 18, The Kamloops Art Gallery presents Ithin-eh-wuk—we place ourselves at the center: James Nicholas and Sandra Semchuk. For over fifteen years, the artists collaborated on photo-installations and videos that explore the lasting effects of colonialism through the lens of their intercultural marriage.
This exhibition brings together for the first time a comprehensive selection of their work, spanning from their initial meeting in 1993 until Nicholas’s death in 2007. It reflects a profound dialogue between Semchuk’s Ukrainian-Canadian settler background and Nicholas’s experiences as a Rock Cree man.
The works engage with painful histories, personal stories, and the impacts of colonialism, while honoring the land and natural world that ground their narratives. Through their unique perspective as a married couple, their collaborations offer a love story that transcends cultural divides, inviting viewers to reflect on the truths of each other’s histories and the lasting effects of colonial legacies.
Everyone is invited to celebrate the Kamloops Art Gallery’s winter exhibitions on Saturday, January 18 from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Join us for a welcome with Diena Jules and Greg Ferguson and seated conversation in the Central Gallery with Richard Hill, Timothy Long, and Sandra Semchuk, followed by a casual reception in the KAG Studios and Atrium with live music by Daniela O'Fee. The evening also offers an art-making area for children, as well as wine sponsored by Twisted Spirits on 3rd, beer from Bright Eye Brewing, and coffee.
Ithin-eh-wuk—we place ourselves at the center: James Nicholas and Sandra Semchuk is organized and circulated by the MacKenzie Art Gallery. The MacKenzie receives ongoing support from the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation, Canada Council for the Arts, Sask Lotteries, City of Regina, University of Regina, and SK Arts.
