FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEOct. 22, 2024Caetani Centre Hosts Two New Workshop
SeriesCreative Space and Creative Reconciliation take place on the property
once owned by lauded Italian-Canadian artist and teacher Sveva Caetani.
VERNON, BC— The Caetani Centre is pleased to announce that it is holding a
new set of two distinct workshops open to youth and the community at large.
Held from November, 2024 to spring, 2025 at the Caetani Centre, 3401
Pleasant Valley Road in Vernon, all workshops are pay-what-you-can with
funding assistance available so that all populations can partake.
“We would like to thank our funding partners the BC Arts Council, Community
Foundation of the North Okanagan and the Regional District of the North
Okanagan for making these workshops possible and for supporting important
initiatives set out by the Caetani Cultural Centre Society,” says Laisha
Rosnau, Caetani Centre Executive Director.
“The workshops align with what our benefactor Sveva Caetani wished for her
property and to our society’s mandate to cultivate a vibrant, inclusive and
diverse space and provide opportunities and programming that celebrate
contemporary artistic expressions across all arts mediums and genres.”
Starting Saturday, Nov. 2 and continuing to April 2025, the Caetani
Centre’s new youth art program, Creating Space
<https://www.caetani.org/creating-space>, is a series of accessible,
inclusive workshops and open studio time for ages 13-18.
“Creating Space has been designed with equity-deserving and historically
under-represented youth in mind, and is open to all. The program provides a
safe and inclusive environment for youth to explore, create and innovate
through various artistic mediums,” says Rosnau.
Each workshop and open studio will be facilitated by a professional artist
specializing in a variety of art mediums, including textile art and
multimedia design, syilx land-based art and design, painting on tule
paper, and literary arts. Youth will gain insight and support from the
workshop facilitators, who have each experienced and overcome barriers and
discrimination in their personal and professional lives.
Youth will also be able to take part in a curation workshop to prepare for
an exhibition of their art and writing to be held in the Caetani Gallery in
April 2025.
More information and registration for Creating Space is available at
https://www.caetani.org/creating-space.
The other workshop series, Creative Reconciliation
<https://www.caetani.org/creative-reconciliation>, offers an in-depth
exploration of syilx culture and practice and is open to individuals of all
ages and community groups.
Held on the first Monday of every month from November, 2024 to March, 2025
(January’s workshop will be on the second Monday), each session provides a
distinct opportunity to learn about respectful engagement with First Nation
communities, experience traditional storytelling, understand cultural
appropriation, and participate in environmental stewardship.
Facilitated by syilx educators Mariel Belanger and Sienna Belanger-Lee,
interactive activities and thoughtful discussions will offer valuable
insights into cultural respect and environmental care.
“Although each workshop is designed to stand alone, attendees are welcome
to join any individual session or participate in the entire series,” says
Rosnau.

About the Caetani Centre:
The Caetani Centre is a vibrant arts and culture facility housed in a
designated heritage home, featuring a gallery, exhibition space, and artist
studios on a beautiful 1.3-acre property in the heart of Vernon, BC.
Recognized as one of the North Okanagan’s premier arts venues, the Centre
welcomes visitors and artists from around the world, offering a diverse
array of regional, national, and international cultural programming,
events, and festivals.
Rooted in the compelling legacy of resilience and strength of Sveva
Caetani, the Centre seeks to harness the power of art and storytelling to
inspire creativity, build community, and enrich lives. Sveva’s life, marked
by both grandeur and hardship, reflects a journey from isolation in her
family home in Vernon to active participation in the local arts community,
which embraced her upon her return to society.
When Sveva entrusted her home to the Greater Vernon community in 1994, she
envisioned it as a cultural hub for artistic expression and exploration.
Thanks to community support, this vision has come to fruition. The Caetani
Centre continues to connect past and present, fostering creativity and
community. For more information about Sveva Caetani and the Caetani Centre,
