Bluto’s Cave: Allegory of the Man Cave
January 13 to April 6, 2024
The Cube, Kamloops Art Gallery
Sensory Art Experience at the Kamloops Art Gallery: Activate Motion Sensors to Reveal a Humorous Exploration of the Man-Cave and Masculinity
Kelowna-based artist Patrick Lundeen uses sculpture, sound, and video to transform The Cube into a man cave that, rather than providing respite from reality, challenges the tropes of manhood. In Bluto’s Cave: Allegory of the Man Cave, Lundeen positions Bluto, the infamous adversary of the comic-strip character Popeye, as a mascot for contemporary masculinity. The exhibition is a sensory experience featuring a Bluto sculpture that transmits video of the viewer onto its body and motion sensors that activate sound and video. Referencing Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, Lundeen adds a philosophical layer that urges viewers to consider willingly embracing ignorance. Bluto’s Cave: Allegory of the Man Cave offers a shift in perspective on gender roles and encourages a humorous reconsideration of societal conventions and masculinity in today's polarized world.
