What is Fragile? Victoria Verge and zev tiefenbach
April 20 to July 12, 2024

April 23, 2024 - Kelowna, BC: Two artists explore the question "What is Fragile?" as part of a new presentation at the Kelowna Art Gallery. Kelowna-based artist Victoria Verge and Salmon Arm-based artist zev tiefenbach showcase their recent work, created during their Master of Fine Arts candidacy at UBC Okanagan.

Visitors will encounter interactive sculptures by Verge in the space that are motion activated. She titles these sculptural meditations Chasing the Echoes of Home. Accompanying these works is a large installation featuring wallpaper and vintage furniture. Across the exhibition space, teifenbach has meticulously assembled a collection of photographs and videos called these are fragile days. Viewers are invited to flip through this personal archive from the artist and curate their own narrative while contemplating the intricacies of memory in their own lives.

"Through their unique artistic explorations, Verge and tiefenbach shed light on how fragile the human spirit can be," says Curator Christine May. "Visitors to the exhibition are encouraged to think deeply about how art can transform us, and the important role that artists play in shaping today's social and cultural stories."

The Kelowna Art Gallery isn't the only place to see work by this year's batch of MFA Students from UBC Okanagan. At the Lake Country Art Gallery, Jessie Emilie and Troy Teichrib are exhibiting their large-scale paintings from May 18 to July 14, 2024.

"Through a range of mediums, these students are offering visitors the opportunity to explore the next generation of contemporary art across a variety of styles," says Wanda Lock, Curator at the Lake Country Art Gallery.

Through their work, Verge and tiefenbach explore the delicate interplay of memory, movement, and resilience. An Opening Reception has been planned for Friday, April 26, 2024, from 6 to 8 pm, at the Kelowna Art Gallery. The event is free and open to the public to attend. Both artists will be on hand.

Victoria Verge is a multi-medium artist of settler and Mi'kmaw ancestry, currently residing on the unceded and traditional territory of the syilx/Okanagan people. In 2016, she obtained a BFA from Memorial University of Newfoundland, specializing in visual arts with a minor in art history. She is currently in her second year as an MFA candidate at UBC Okanagan.
