Cindy Mochizuki’s immersive multi-media exhibition holds space for the stories of Japanese Canadians through audio fiction, performance, animation, and community engagement.

The Kamloops Art Gallery’s spring exhibition Ancestral Dreams and Other Premonitions, curated by Charo Neville, opens April 20. In this solo exhibition, Vancouver-based artist Cindy Mochizuki, re-tells stories drawn from the Japanese Canadian experience. Employing audio fiction, performance, animation, and community engagement, Mochizuki’s multi-media installation weaves family, community, and memory to shed light on invisible histories and archives. Mochizuki’s practice opens pathways for Japanese Canadians to share stories shaped by trauma and reveal a larger narrative of Japanese resilience in Canada, often drawing from her family’s history within internment camps in Canada during World War II and their post-war experiences in Japan.

Step into the real and imagined realms of Ancestral Dreams and Other Premonitions through four key artworks. Autumn Strawberry and Tides & Moons: Herring Capital illuminate the resilience of Japanese Canadian communities amidst adversity, The Sakaki Tree, a Jewel, and the Mirror explores folklore through 50 enigmatic figurines and performances, and Cave to Dream features four fictional videos with sound, hand-drawn animation, and live-action video.

Join us for the opening reception and visit Ancestral Dreams and Other Premonitions in the Central Gallery from April 20 to July 6, 2024.
