‘Display Case’ features eclectic objects gathered from community



Adad Hannah: Display Case

at the Kelowna Art Gallery



October 18, 2023 – Kelowna, BC: It’s not often that an Etch-a-Sketch, a rotary dial telephone, or a large hunk of blue glass find their way into an art presentation, but these are just a few of the objects visitors will encounter in Display Case.



For his experimental installation at the Kelowna Art Gallery, Vancouver-based artist Adad Hannah dreamed up an ad-hoc greenhouse structure filled with surprises in every nook and corner, including objects made by the artist along with ones he collected from the community.



“It looks like a museum display, but as you begin to examine it closer, you will probably notice something is not quite right about it,” explains artist Adad Hannah. “The objects are not the kind of thing you would normally see on display in a museum or art gallery.”



Although Hannah is well known for his large-scale, site-specific installations that have been exhibited internationally, he elected to take a different route for Okanagan audiences.



“Display Case is a fun, experimental project that is sure to capture the interest of our visitors over the course of the year,” says Curator Christine May. “Visitors can look forward to seeing new objects unveiled throughout the run of the exhibition, as it continues to change and evolve over time.”



Although the installation may feel like a cousin to a “Cabinet of Curiosities” or museum collection, Display Case is only temporary. It continues the artist’s interest in working on sculptural projects that are ephemeral in nature — such as his Saskatoon Guernica (2021) commissioned by the Remai Modern — which recreated Pablo Picasso’s iconic painting in a sculptural form with the help of community members who supplied the materials.



Display Case can be seen (in its many iterations) until September 2024.



Adad Hannah was born in New York in 1971, spent his childhood in Israel and England, and moved to Vancouver in the early 1980’s. He holds a Ph.D. and MFA from Concordia University and a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art & Design. Hannah’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout North America, Europe, West Africa, Australia, and Korea.



The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315 Water Street, in downtown Kelowna, B.C.
