Mallory Tolcher
The Fadeaway

July 8 to September 9, 2023
The Cube, Kamloops Art Gallery

Handmade jerseys, large-scale couture photography, and a floral backboard: Art exhibition confronts gendered stereotypes in women’s basketball.

Canadian artist Mallory Tolcher captures the inequitable history of women's basketball through handmade jerseys, couture photography, and floral sculpture. Tolcher's exhibition, The Fadeaway, is inspired by the iconic fadeaway jump shot, executed when the shooter gracefully and effortlessly glides away from the defender while maintaining control of the ball. Tolcher's re-imagined jerseys reference the historical limitations on women's sports attire through materials like tulle, organza, ribbon, and satin. Some jerseys exaggerate the impractical designs of the past with floor-length gowns and elaborate blouses that remind us of the progress made in accepting women in professional sports. By integrating modern jersey elements with fashion and incorporating slogans from gender rights activism, Tolcher's work celebrates the impact of social justice in women's basketball.
