Overview
The position performs skilled technical and trades work involving the construction and installation of various exhibitions and displays for the Richmond Art Gallery. This position requires expertise in art handling, carpentry, painting, finishing, and related tasks, as well as the installation and basic troubleshooting of media technologies for artistic exhibitions and displays. The Exhibition Technician works under the general supervision of the Gallery Director and Curator and must demonstrate considerable independence of judgment and action in performing their duties.
Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
* Prepares and installs artistic exhibitions, handling and installing a wide variety of art mediums.
* Assists staff and artists to prepare gallery and exhibit design and layout.
* Leads work in various areas, including packing and crating, matting and framing, and installation of two- and three-dimensional artworks.
* Installs and maintain AV equipment, including troubleshooting of digital technology for exhibitions and displays.
* Constructs exhibition displays by performing tasks such as carpentry, framing, electrical wiring, dry-walling, painting, and other related tasks.
* Installs and maintains technical components of exhibitions and displays. Troubleshoots basic hardware and software issues and make recommendations for repair and/or upgrades.
* Sources and acquires materials and supplies related to exhibit installations and maintenance.
* Provides orientation to staff and volunteers on the use of technologies utilized in exhibitions.
* Collects and moves artworks
* Wraps and packs artworks in preparation for storage or shipping
* Prepares and maintains records, reports and correspondence related to the exhibition
* Opens and closes the facilities; monitors safety and security of same; as required, assists in providing visitor services, information and support to other staff.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Ability to install and maintain computer hardware and software in exhibition and perform basic hardware and software troubleshooting.
Ability to lift and move heavy objects
Ability to follow installation plans put forward by the Curator and Artist and devise a technical plan/process to install the exhibition in dialogue with the Curator.
Ability to make in-the-moment decisions to resolve technical issues in dialogue with the Artist(s) and Curator.
Ability to follow best practices for the handling and installation of art works in a variety of artistic mediums, including, but not limited to, packing and crating artwork.
Demonstrated understanding of hazards and necessary safety precautions
Demonstrated understanding of standard practices, methods and skills, materials, variety of tools and equipment for carpentry and cabinet making.
Knowledge of policies and procedures associated with Exhibition standards.
Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and to establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers.
Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, contracts and related material and to provide direction, information and assistance to other City staff persons.
Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to the work.
Ability to work independently in the technical aspects of the role.
Must successfully clear a Police Information Check.
Qualifications and Experience:
Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by completion of a one (1) year program in visual arts and//or relevant trades related to the work.
Minimum of two (2) years of related work experience including experience as an Exhibition Technician, Preparator, or Exhibition Installer at an art gallery, museum, or artist studio.
Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia.
Working Conditions:
The work is performed in an environment with occasional exposure to minor or little exposure to major disagreeable conditions or hazards.  May work with materials and equipment such as ladders, lifts, matte knives, drills and saws. Some exhibitions require handling items such as large plates of glass or handling large, awkward works made of various materials.
