Curatorial Assistant- Richmond Art Gallery, City of Richmond

Overview
This position assists the Curator in support of Richmond Art Gallery's exhibitions and permanent collection.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
*             Provide curatorial support for exhibitions including research and writing for exhibition development, publications, didactics, and information sheets.
*             Provide administrative curatorial support for exhibitions including conducting condition reports, photographing artworks, liaising with artists, organizing and updating submissions, organizing and maintaining artist   images and files, purchasing materials, receiving and shipping of artworks and assisting Exhibition Technician.
*             Update and maintain collection records for the Richmond Art Gallery Collection including accession registers, donor files, artifact loan and finding aids in both electronic and hard copy format.
*             Support the Curator in maintaining the Richmond Art Galley collection and educating staff and volunteers about collections care and preservation.
*             Responsible for maintaining the Art Gallery's Reference Library.
*             Mitigate threats to the collection by practicing preventative conservation and ensuring collections are stored and displayed properly.
*             Maintain and update the Art Gallery's database and hardcopy records.
*             Provide administrative support in updating information on website and generating Social Media content - Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WeChat.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
*             Mandarin and/or Cantonese language skills is an asset.
*             Knowledge of the Curatorial profession, institutions and sites including industry methods, principles and national standards and guidelines.
*             Knowledge of collections policy standards, preventative conservation and accessioning & deaccessioning procedures.
*             Knowledge and skill in the care, handling, housing and preventative conservation of collections to ensure safety of art works.
*             Knowledge and skill in the area of photography in order to digitize various collections.
*             Ability to make decisions regarding work plans, create timelines for projects, prioritize work and schedule volunteers.
*             Skill and ability to use a related database program management.
*             Ability to work both independently and interdependently while exercising sound judgement and initiative.
*             Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with both internal staff and external clients/customers.
*             Ability to courteously and effectively deal with the public in providing information and assistance regarding exhibitions and collections.
*             Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, work well under pressure and deal with stressful situations with professionalism.
*             Ability to follow direction and meet established deadlines.
*             Ability to successfully pass a Police Information Check.
*             Knowledge of Canadian, British Columbia and/or Richmond history is considered an asset.

Qualifications and Experience:
A Bachelor's degree in a related discipline including or supplemented by courses in museum studies, cultural management, collections policy standards, preventative conservation and accessioning and deaccessioning procedures. A minimum of 1 year experience working with museum collections. Experience working with art collections with hands on experience in a gallery setting working directly with art works, preventative conservation, research, legal and ethical issues is an asset.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an environment with regular exposure to minor or occasional exposure to major disagreeable conditions or hazards.  Exposure to dust and possible contaminants such as mould and fungus when working with artifacts new to the collection. Routine light lifting and occasional heavy lifting is required.

The City of Richmond has a Covid-19 Vaccination Policy which requires all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination by December 20th, 2021 as a condition of employment.

Salary Range: $31.82 - $37.40
Hours of Work:  Flex Blocking System in Effect: This position is on a flexible-blocking schedule. Hours will be scheduled based on operational need and can include daytime, evening, weekdays and weekends shifts of varying lengths as each shift can be extended or shortened by moving blocks of time as required within the pay period. Day shifts will be scheduled if there is no operational need for evening and weekend work.
