Position: Assistant Curator (Young Canada Works Building Careers in
Heritage Internship)

Location: Fort St. John North Peace Museum, 9323-100th Street, Fort St.
John, BC V1J 4N4

Wage: $16.00/hour

Start Date: November 29, 2021

End Date: March 31, 2022

Daily Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm (one hour lunch from 1 pm to 2 pm)

Weekly Hours: 35 hours



Job Description

The assistant curator will assist with ongoing scanning and cataloguing
projects in the Fort St. John North Peace Museum’s collection and archives.
The assistant curator will help catalogue incoming and backlogged donations
to the museum. He/she will assist with scanning and describing an enormous
collection of over 2000 negatives taken by local photographer Rudy Schubert
in the 1940s-1960s as well as scanning and indexing the Alaska Highway
News.

The assistant curator will have the opportunity to research and develop a
small exhibit on Indigenous place names for the museum’s display case at
the North Peace Regional Airport.



The intern will carry out the following duties:

Collections Management

·      General cataloguing

o   Learning museum procedures concerning the care and safe handling of
artefacts and archival materials

o   Learning the Fort St. John North Peace Museum’s cataloguing procedures

o   Accessioning, cataloguing, researching, and storing recently
donated/backlogged artefacts, photographs, and documents

·      Schubert Negatives

o   Scanning and describing the Schubert negatives

o   Working with community members to identify the subjects and places
featured in Schubert’s negatives

·      Newspaper Project

o   Learning how to operate a large-scale scanner

o   Scanning and indexing newspapers

o   Assisting volunteers in trouble-shooting newspaper scanning
technological issues

o   Helping to track down missing newspaper issues/pages and scan them

o   Housing newspapers

Exhibit Development:

·      Researching Indigenous place names

·      Working with Indigenous people and organizations in/around Fort St.
John to record more Indigenous place names and collect information about
these names (and recording this information for the museum’s archives)

·      Writing and editing an exhibit script

·      Selecting photographs to accompany exhibit text

·      Designing the exhibit signs

General Museum Tasks & Networking:

·      Learning how to operate the cash register and interact with museum
visitors and gift shop customers

·      Carrying out the opening and closing tasks required of museum staff
including a small amount of Covid-related cleaning

·      Assisting the manager/curator with small tasks around the museum
(collections management, conservation, exhibits, educational initiatives,
etc.)

·      Attending museum meetings and networking with Peace Region museums



Qualifications

The applicants for this position must have an interest in Canadian and
local history and be willing to learn more about Fort St. John and the
North Peace region. Candidates should enjoy meeting and interacting with
the public. Applicants need to be organized, flexible, self-motivated, and
able to work without constant direct supervision. They must work well with
Museum staff and volunteers. These individuals must be responsible and
mature. Excellent computer, research, and writing skills are required.
Experience in cataloguing, digitizing historic documents, and developing
exhibits are assets.



Applicants must be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of
employment and registered under the Young Canada Works program. They must
be Canadian citizens or permanent residents or have refugee status in
Canada and must be legally entitled to work in Canada. Interns must be
willing to commit to the full duration of this work position (Nov. 29, 2021
to March 31, 2022) and will not hold another full-time job (30+ hours) or
receive EI while employed with us. Applicants must be unemployed or
underemployed and have completed a college or university degree in museum
studies, archival studies, history, public history, or a similar field.
