FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Maritime Museum (VMM) launches Canoe Cultures exhibition
*On June 17, *the VMM to launch *Canoe Cultures: Building a Legacy**,* an
exhibition celebrating the work of the Canoe Cultures program. The
exhibition, curated by Roxanne Charles, features early images of canoe
racing on the West Coast and highlights recent work done through the Canoe
Cultures program.

The Canoe Cultures program is an initiative to build Indigenous racing
canoes for community use. The project is led by seventh-generation canoe
builder Mike Billy Sr., who has the hereditary Squamish name Lemxacha Siyam.

"It's not just a canoe to us,” says Billy, “it's something that has a
soul, something that has a life, something that you have to take care of
and nourish."

“The VMM is honoured to host this exhibition and to share Indigenous
maritime traditions with our audience,” says VMM Curator and Interim Museum
Manager Duncan MacLeod. “Preserving Indigenous knowledge systems as Canoe
Cultures does through the building of canoes is important for strengthening
communities and passing on skills to new generations.”

Canoe Cultures: Building a Legacy will be on view from *June 17 to August
2, 2021*. For more information, visit the exhibition webpage.
