Job Title: Indigenous Engagement Intern

Organization Description: Mandate: The Vernon Public Art Gallery’s mandate if five-fold: to exhibit, collect and preserve local, regional, national and international art of the highest possible standards; to promote visual arts in the broader community; to provide information, education, challenge and inspiration in the visual arts; to encourage appreciation of, and participation in, the visual arts; to provide a meeting place, facility and institution for the benefit of the citizens of Greater Vernon.
Mission: The Vernon Public Art Gallery exists to connect our community to the creative presence and possibilities within the visual arts through its exhibitions and activities.
Job description: The intern will work closely with the VPAG team members in supporting programming and exhibition development. Develop and implement outreach strategies and activities with Indigenous groups and other diverse community groups. Advising the organization as we continue to address issues of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion throughout the organization.
Project and job activities: The Indigenous Engagement Intern will strive to imbed the Vernon Public Art Gallery’s values of innovation, collaboration and excellence in all aspects of their work. The intern will be encouraged to strengthen and broaden VPAG’s relationships with its neighboring Indigenous communities while seeking opportunities to work collaboratively in the creation of programming and strategies to increase engagement.
Goals of the project:

  *   Incorporate Indigenous perspectives into the operational structure of the VPAG to ensure inclusive, respectful and effective engagement with our local Indigenous community.
  *   Incorporate Sylix language/markers into relevant areas/signage of the VPAG.
  *   Deepen VPAG’s relationships with members of the local Indigenous communities to enable enhanced collaboration and more culturally sensitive programming options.
Tasks:

  *   Stewarding existing relationships and cultivating new relationships and partnerships, with OKIB and surrounding Indigenous communities.
  *   Encouraging collaborations throughout the community which include the host nation, Elders, language champions and knowledge keepers.
  *   Engaging in partnerships with Indigenous stakeholders to inform our policies, exhibitions and programs.
  *   Developing and assisting with funding applications to support new initiatives related to Indigenous engagement.
  *   Supporting educational programming and exhibition development, especially Indigenous artists and content.
  *   Supporting ongoing internal and external cultural sensitivity training.
  *   Supporting work acknowledging territory in new and meaningful ways.
  *    Centralize the protocols and procedures in relation to indigenous communities and diversity staying attuned to evolving practices within the arts and culture sector.
  *   Recommending strategies to further the inclusiveness of the Gallery.
  *   Other activities as directed by the Curator and Executive Director.

Education and Experience: Post-Secondary Graduate

  *   Must be a recent graduate, preferably with some post-secondary courses in any of the following: fine arts, Indigenous studies, and/or museum studies.
  *   Firsthand knowledge of the protocols and procedures to develop relationships with Indigenous Elders, leaders and knowledge keepers.
  *   Skilled at building and maintaining relationships and partnerships with Indigenous artists, community groups, organizations and stakeholders.
  *   Passion for arts and culture
  *   Proactive and self-motivated
  *   Ability to facilitate matters of cultural protocol and cultural safety.
  *   Can demonstrate a strong understanding of the local context.
  *   Desire to contribute to and collaborate with a creative team.
  *   Confident and clear communicator with strong written and oral communication skills.
Skills:

  *   Ability to work independently or as a team member; planning, organization and time management skills; research skills and cash management.
  *   Proficient in the use of computers, Microsoft Office and internet applications; calculator; and copy/fax machine.
