*EMILY AND HER CREATURES: A LOOK AT EMILY CARR'S PETS*

*A Free Noon-Hour Talk at Carr House*

*(Victoria, BC, 7 July 2021) *“Life would be dank hideous without
creatures.” Emily Carr wrote this line to her friend Nan Cheney in 1938,
reflecting on all the animals she had loved throughout her life. From the
crow she raised on her family’s porch as a teenager to the monkey that
chattered around the yard of her boarding house, Emily Carr’s most intense
bonds were often with animals rather than people. On July 14th, Carr House
is kicking off a series of short lunchtime talks with an exploration of
some of the animals that impacted Emily’s life and art, including the birds
she raised in a sanatorium in England, her loyal dog Billie, and her monkey
Woo. During this talk, we’ll be sharing anecdotes and quotes from Emily’s
own writing, as well as photographs and sketches of Emily and her animals.
Join us to take a look at the animals that Emily turned to for comfort,
amusement, and inspiration.

This talk will be held at noon on *July 14th* in the garden of Carr House,
207 Government Street. Although there will be some chairs available, we
encourage you to bring your seating. Afterwards, there will be an
opportunity to look inside Carr House, with staggered entry and masks
required. In keeping with Emily Carr’s deep affection for animals, any
donations from this event will be going to the BC SPCA Wild ARC, a wildlife
rehabilitation centre on southern Vancouver Island dedicated to the rescue
and rehabilitation of sick, injured, and orphaned wild animals. For more
information on this event, call (250) 383-5843 or email carrhouse at telus.net.

Also join us for our next two noon-hour talks:

*July 28* Emily's Listening Ladies: How Flora Burns and Ruth Humphries
Shaped Emily Carr's Writing

*August 11* Funny Books: Emily Carr as a Cartoonist
