creatures.” Emily Carr wrote this line to her friend Nan Cheney in 1938,
reflecting on all the animals she had loved throughout her life. From the crow
she raised on her family’s porch as a teenager to the monkey that chattered
around the yard of her boarding house, Emily Carr’s most intense bonds were
often with animals rather than people. On July 14th, Carr House is
kicking off a series of short lunchtime talks with an exploration of some of
the animals that impacted Emily’s life and art, including the birds she raised
in a sanatorium in England, her loyal dog Billie, and her monkey Woo. During
this talk, we’ll be sharing anecdotes and quotes from Emily’s own writing, as
well as photographs and sketches of Emily and her animals. Join us to take a
look at the animals that Emily turned to for comfort, amusement, and
inspiration. </span></p>
