Science and Innovation Program Intern

North Vancouver Museum & Archives Commission

(Temporary Part-Time Position)

MONOVA: Museum and Archives of North Vancouver is expanding its program offerings as it opens its new Museum in 2021. The Science and Innovations Program Intern will review, adapt, and deliver the Eureka Effects Science programs for covid-safe on-site and virtual delivery for children and families and will research and develop programming around climate change with our Archives, Indigenous Cultural Programmers, and other programs staff. The Eureka Effects program consists of four interactive, interpretive shows that explore the landscape and environment of the North Shore through fun science. They are filled with eye-catching experiments, are participatory for families and general visitors, and highlight the wonder of the natural world while encouraging empathy and communal responsibility. The MONOVA Archives also contain evidence from BC mountaineers that, when compared to current data, demonstrate some of the impact of climate change on the North Shore mountains, making it an excellent resource for future programs. The successful applicant will gain experience in education program and event development and delivery in a museum environment. They will be supervised and mentored by MONOVA Programs staff.

Specific Duties:

·     Review and adapt two science shows for covid-safe onsite delivery and virtual delivery to school groups.

·     Collaborate with the Indigenous Cultural Programmers to incorporate Indigenous content and perspectives in each show.

·     Converse with visitors and facilitate dialogue between them on relevant topics. Present all four interactive science shows on the themes of Beneath Burrard Inlet, Amazing Animals, Making Mountains, and The Forest.

·     Work with MONOVA staff and volunteers on the promotion and evaluation of the four shows and the speaker series.

·     Review research materials on relevant subjects and conduct original research in the Archives on materials connected to the changing climate on the North Shore.

·     Collaborate with colleagues to brainstorm, develop, and test ideas for programs around climate change.

·     Compile legacy materials such as scripts, evaluation results, and reports digitally for use by future staff.

·     Compile statistics, process feedback/response mechanisms, and write reports.

·     Demonstrate enthusiastic interest and appreciation of North Vancouver history.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge:

·     Diploma or undergraduate degree/certificate in areas of science, museum education, education, acting, cultural resource management, or public programming. Additional coursework in history, education, Indigenous studies, or other related subjects are an asset.

·     A strong interest in science education, museum education, public programing, or public engagement.

·     Experience presenting and performing before live audiences.

·     Fluent in English; able to understand and interact with the public; some knowledge of French or other additional languages are an asset.

·     Experience researching, writing, and organizing presentations for a variety of audiences.

·     Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.

·     Demonstrated ability to positively represent a public organization to the community.

·     Willingness to contribute to discussions and able to accept feedback and apply it.

·     Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service.

·     Energetic, outgoing, open-minded, empathetic, and flexible personality and creativity.

·     Ability to lift 50 lbs. (22kg).

·     Good computer skills (keyboarding & social media).

·     Valid clean BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence and Criminal Record Check.

·     Strong organizational and communication skills.

Wage: $21.69 plus 12% in lieu of benefits           Work week: 28 hrs/week (4 x 7 hr days)

Term: August 30 2021 to March 11 2022 (28 work weeks)

Work Sites: Museum of North Vancouver (115 W Esplanade, North Vancouver) and Archives of North Vancouver (3203 Institute Road)

This position is funded in part via Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage Internships for Graduates program of the Department of Canadian Heritage, administered through the Canadian Museums Association. Candidates must be registered on the Young Canada Works website and meet all eligibility criteria to be considered for this position:

• are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (Non-Canadian students holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible).

• are legally entitled to work in Canada.

• will be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.

• are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment.

• will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW.

• are an unemployed or underemployed.

• are a graduate from college or university.

• are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with YCW.

• Priority will be given graduates who have not previously participated in a YCW Internships program.
