HAMM in Courtenay is being forced to shut down the Veterans Memorial for HMCS ALBERNI because we have to move away from the homeless camp the City put next door to us. We don’t happen to have a spare $3 million to write the heritage building owner a cheque, so we applied for grants that would help us acquire the property. We were turned down immediately because none of us are paid. So I wrote to the top (Mark Carney) so it would trickle down to the correct ministries. I was complaining that smaller museums that have volunteer staff with experience and we small museums are struggling or (as in our case) have to close our doors. If we had the $70-90k for one of our salaries, we would have spent it on our current overhead instead.
