<div dir="ltr"><div>Hello,</div><div><br></div><div>I am not sure about your particular gas mask, or mining masks in general. However, I've worked with a lot of military and civilian wartime gas masks and they always contained asbestos. One immediate action to take is to store the mask double bagged in sealed heavy duty polythene bags, with a clear warning label on the outside. In the case of asbestos permanently encapsulating or removing the hazardous contents is something only a trained expert should attempt. Asbestos is tricky too, it shows up in the oddest places, and its risk level changes as the object breaks down. I'd definitely recommend bagging it, even if it's in storage, until you are 100% sure it's safe. Whatever you do, don't let anyone try it on! </div><div><br></div><div>Military museums are usually great resources for how to handle gas masks because they have so many. I find the museums over in Britain often have publicly accessible bulletins and blogs about their gas masks. </div><div><br></div><div>Good luck, </div><div><br></div><div>Carolyn Ben. </div><div><br></div></div><br><div class="gmail_quote gmail_quote_container"><div dir="ltr" class="gmail_attr">On Fri, Jan 10, 2025 at 6:21 PM Moderated BCMA subscriber listserv <<a href="mailto:listserv@lists.museum.bc.ca">listserv@lists.museum.bc.ca</a>> wrote:<br></div><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0px 0px 0px 0.8ex;border-left:1px solid rgb(204,204,204);padding-left:1ex">Hi, friends. I am sending this on behalf of the Revelstoke Railway Museum Collections Committee.<br>
<br>
The Museum has received a Protexall gas mask which was used by the railway in very long tunnels in the event of a mechanical breakdown or stalls. Even with the ventilation systems available, the danger of asphyxiation was very real.<br>
<br>
Please see the attached photos. I am wondering if anyone has advice on the potential for toxic materials in this object which we should be aware of, and recommended mitigation? While the object will be stored, there is the possibility it could be exhibited in the future.<br>

Many thanks<br>
