We experienced that very same thing and fell for it to the tune of $400. Received an email from (what looked like) one of our most visible members and supporters. This very same supporter had just been writing back and forth with me about a matter related to the museum’s cabinetmaking. When the fake email came in, it had the member’s profile name I had been writing with, and I didn’t pay any attention to the “@” portion. Exactly like in your example, it said basically the same thing, so I didn’t blink when asked to help out “John”. Just as completed the final reply, I realized what I had done.

I felt like a fool for a long time because I harped on my staff to not fall for this kind of email, then I fell for it, HOOK, LINE, and SINKER

If you would like to somehow share it with other organizations, it may be a good preventative. I am attaching the conversation copied from the emails for you to do with as you think best.
