Britannia Beach, B.C. (March 6, 2026) – Trade screen time for STEAM time this Spring Break and Easter at Britannia Mine Museum<https://www.britanniaminemuseum.ca/>, where curiosities will be sparked and a sense of adventure brought to life through a lineup of hands-on, family-friendly discoveries and fascinating stories for explorers of all ages to enjoy.
From Saturday, March 14th to Sunday, March 29th 2026, the museum will present its Spring Break programs, featuring its “Live in the Lab: Secret Identities” interpreter-led STEAM learning sessions, along with its popular “Step Back in Time” social history programs: “Whatever Happened to Mt. Sheer” and “Before Roads and Rail”.
“Live in the Lab: Secret Identities” will run from Mondays to Fridays between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the Terra Lab where guests can roll up their sleeves and step into the role of Britannia’s historic assayers — geologists who conduct experiments to identify minerals extracted from the mountain. Through hands-on interpreter-led demonstrations and experiments such as streak testing, hardness comparisons, and safe acid reactions, this engaging, science-forward experience highlights the critical role earth science played in the mine’s success and offers young explorers a fun and interactive way to uncover the secrets of mineral identification.
Discover Britannia Mine’s fascinating history with the museum’s “Step Back in Time” social history series inside the Britannia Story building:
• “What Happened to Mount Sheer” at 1:30 p.m. daily where people can learn about the once-thriving Mount Sheer mining community located high above the Britannia Mine. The mining town located on top of Mount Sheer was a vibrant community which at one point in 1940 reached a population of 1,200 with 200 families and was home to the underground mine workers and their families and had everything including a swimming pool, hospital, theatre, recreation centre and hotel. Perfect for history buffs and curious minds, visitors will discover the lives of the families who lived there, the challenges they faced, and why the town eventually disappeared.
• “Before Roads and Rail” at 3:30 p.m. daily takes visitors on a journey back in time and provides them with insight into what it was like to commute to Britannia Mine before there were roads or rail. Discover how steamships once brought life, labour, and leisure to Howe Sound, turning the Britannia Beach pier into the town’s beating heart. With rare video footage, vivid narration, and powerful stories of community and resilience, this program brings Britannia’s past to life—not just as a mine, but as a lifeline shaped by the tides.
For the Easter long weekend from Friday, April 3 to Monday, April 6, the museum will be hosting Easter themed activities where visitors can take part in a festive scavenger hunt with a unique mining twist as they explore the site in search of hidden surprises. Hop aboard the museum’s special Easter underground train tour and discover how every day felt like an Easter egg hunt for the hardworking miners of Britannia Mine. Learn about the challenges and discoveries that shaped life mining underground in an engaging, family-friendly experience. Visitors can also drop in at the Terra Lab for the “Live in the Lab: Secret Identities” interpreter-led hands-on learning sessions.
Located 45 minutes north of Vancouver on the picturesque Sea-to-Sky highway, the Britannia Mine Museum provides unique and memorable experiences that engage visitors of all ages. Visitors can enjoy fun exhibits and crowd favourites like the underground mine train, gold panning, the award-winning special effects BOOM! show inside the historic 20-storey concentrator Mill building, the minerals and gem gallery, the gift shop and the Beaty Lundin Visitor Centre.
