The Archives Association of British Columbia is pleased to present our next
offering of the workshop *“Archives 101: Archival Practice with Indigenous
Organizations”*, May 26 - June 9, 2026. We are most grateful for the
support of Library and Archives Canada Documentary Heritage Communities
Program that allows us to offer our Indigenous colleagues a reduced
registration rate for this training.

*Workshop overview:*
The workshop “Archives 101: Archival Practice with Indigenous
Organizations” will be of interest to Tribal/First Nations Government
administrators, archivists, cultural memory keepers, community members, and
students working to support and develop Indigenous archives programs. The
workshop will provide an introduction to archival theory and best practices
that participants will be able to use on a daily basis.

Participants will learn:
- how to create a foundation for developing their archives program and
strategies for the practical management and appraisal of records;
- how to provide collaborative Indigenous and western access protocols;
- how to process and maintain access to records created on different media
formats (textual records, audio-visual, sound recordings and electronic
records);
- best practices for disaster planning;
- where to find archival resources and different funding opportunities
available for Indigenous organizations.

Woven throughout the discussion topics will be reflections on how western
archival practices can be balanced and integrated to support Indigenous
practices and protocols of knowledge sharing.

Upon registration, participants will be asked to complete a brief survey to
identify training interests and questions that will be incorporated into
the workshop materials and discussions.


*Instructors:*
The workshops will be delivered by the AABC’s Education and Advisory
Services Coordinator, Lisa Glandt, and the workshop Indigenous Co-trainer,
Hailey Eli. Lisa and Hailey are excited to bring their collective learned
and lived experiences to the workshop training.


*Format:*
This workshop will be delivered over 7 online sessions that include guest
speakers. It is recommended that participants attend all sessions in order
to fully complete the workshop.

The workshop will be delivered using Zoom webinar software. Zoom is free to
download and links will be provided to participants before the workshop
starts. Participants will need access to a computer with sound/speakers to
view and follow along with the PowerPoint training slides.


*Workshop Materials:*
Participants will receive copies of the presentation slides and relevant
handouts and resources before the workshop starts.

Dates: May 26, 27, 28 & June 2, 3, 4, 9, 2026 (9:30am – 12:30pm PST)

Registration open: February 1 - April 30, 2026 (or earlier if registration
spots are filled)

Registration spaces: 40
