[BCMA] Job Posting: Collections and Exhibits Manager

Job Summary:
Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Collections and Exhibits Manager is responsible for the care, preservation, documentation, and displaying of the museum’s artifacts. The Collections and Exhibits Manager will retrieve and prepare artifacts and artifact information, conducting artifact related research when necessary to provide input to museum personnel regarding collection elements for exhibits, programs, and other museum needs.

Oversight:
The Collections and Exhibits Manager is responsible for all aspects of the museum’s collections, their care, preservation and display. This includes the artifact collection, the archives collection and the library collection. All staff and volunteers related to these areas will report directly to the Collections Manager. The Collections and Exhibits Manager will, in turn, report to the Executive Director.

Primary duties:

  *   Manage incoming acquisitions for all collections, including liaising with donors, accessioning, cataloguing, maintaining object files, transfer of ownership documentation, arrangement of appraisals, and tax receipting
  *   Assess collection items (artifacts, archives and books) for quality and relevance to museum mandate, and identify items for deaccessioning
  *   Manage deaccessioning and disposal process
  *   Manage all incoming and outgoing loans, including communicating with lenders/borrowers, maintaining loan agreements, arranging shipping, and updating object records
  *   Oversee collections care, handling, labelling, cataloguing, storage, display, preservation, preventative conservation, and condition reporting
  *   Document conservation and restoration work on artifacts, archives and books Supervise object and display moves throughout the museum
  *   Follow professional best practice as outlined by the Canadian Museum Association (CMA), Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN), Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI)
  *   Maintain ongoing collection inventory records
  *   Act as primary user for collections management software, CatalogIT
  *   Supervise digital record management in collections software and maintain accurate records on all collection items
  *   Respond to collections research and visit inquiries from the public
  *   Train and supervise collections staff, volunteers and interns
  *   Coordinate and manage Library and Resource Center opening hours and personnel Review, edit and update collections procedures and policy
  *   Lead curation and installation of new exhibits with display team
  *   Maintain a schedule of exhibit changes and updates
  *   Work with and supervise display team staff and volunteers

Other:

  *   Liaise with other museums and museum professionals
  *   Assist with event planning and hosting as necessary
  *   Assist with Shopify and gift shop as necessary
  *   Assist with administration projects as necessary
