Hi friends. I agree with Paul. I am certainly no conservator, but as a consultant I saw a collection which had relied on shipping containers for object and archival collections storage. Like many institutions, they felt they had no other choice. They had installed some ventilation in the hopes of lessening impact on the collection, but sadly there was insect infestation, extensive mold and general deterioration. My takeaway lesson was that shipping containers are at best a very short-term storage solution.

Best,

Dear all, As a conservator my thoughts are about storage in a container are that things inside may suffer from going from the climate of a house to basically a climate that has some buffering and protection from the rain but it might be a climate shock for some artefacts

It would be an interesting experiment to put a monitor in a storage container , but an empty container will react differently to one say full of furniture , as they take in and give out humidity

Good afternoon:

My name is Janis Irvine, from the Bralorne Pioneer Museum. While we await further finishing and construction of a newer Museum we rented a 40 foot container for storage.

We have one also on our property as a destructive forest fires in 2023 here took 54 properties to the ground. We are rebuilding so we also use a 40 foot container for storage too.

Hope this helps,

Subject: [BCMA] Seeking rental storage & workspace options for collections project

Hi all,

The Roedde House Museum is planning a re-organization and collections management project.

Due to our limited space, we are exploring options for storage, ideally in a secure, humidity-controlled environment. We are also looking for a space where tasks such as inventories, re-housing, cataloguing, and labeling can be carried out.

If anyone has suggestions for suitable facilities, we would greatly appreciate your advice!

The museum is located at:
1415 Barclay Street
Vancouver, BC, Canada V6G 1J6

We are open to options in the surrounding area and are ideally looking for a project start date in April 2026 and an end date in October-November.

Thank you very much for your help!

Best regards,
Ada
