The American Philosophical Society (APS) Library & Museum in Philadelphia is one of the largest archives of documents, photos, recordings, and other materials relating to Indigenous peoples of this continent, including materials from British Columbia, which is one of the most extensively represented regions in the APS collections. The talk will provide attendees with information on how to search for collections, access and use archival materials, seek out funding opportunities, and engage with the APS in other ways. It will also share a variety of stories on how Indigenous communities have been using archival materials in innovative ways over the last 15+ years to highlight a variety of possibilities for the future.
Brian Carpenter is the Curator of Indigenous Materials at the American Philosophical Society’s Library & Museum in Philadelphia. An archivist by training, he began working at the APS in 2008 on a six-year project to digitize and catalog all of the Library’s 3,000+ hours of audio recordings of Indigenous languages of the Americas. He has worked with over 80 Indigenous communities throughout North America to enhance their access to archival materials at the APS and receive their guidance on ways to improve the representation and uses of the collections.
