This non-profit organization, based in Nanaimo, BC has been providing fun, hands-on science activities for children, families and the general public.   It offers a wide range of programs, has a strong core of employees (permanent and seasonal) and a fantastic reputation in the community.

Executive Director – Nanaimo Science
Inspire Curiosity. Spark Discovery. Lead with Purpose. Nanaimo Science (Nanaimo Science and Sustainability Society) is a dynamic, community-based non-profit organization that inspires children's curiosity about science and sustainability through fun, hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences. Our mission is to foster a lifelong interest in science and empower youth to explore and engage with the world around them. We offer a wide variety of programming, including school break day camps, homelearner classes, in-school workshops, weekend family events, traveling science shows, birthday parties, and our signature "Science in the Park" outdoor programs.
About the Role
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) is the key leadership role responsible for advancing our mission and guiding the strategic direction, operations, partnerships, and growth of Nanaimo Science. We are seeking a visionary, hands-on leader who can build and grow the organization, foster a positive and collaborative workplace, and ensure high-quality science programming that inspires curiosity and discovery in children and families.
Key Responsibilities
1. Organizational Leadership & Management
a. Lead and manage the daily operations of Nanaimo Science, aligned with strategic goals set by the Board of Directors.
b. Supervise, support, and evaluate full-time and seasonal staff, including hiring, onboarding, training, and professional development.
c. Foster a collaborative, creative, and positive work environment that reflects Nanaimo Science’s mission and values. d. Provide regular updates and strategic guidance to the Board of Directors and work closely on long-term planning and organizational vision. e. Represent Nanaimo Science publicly to partners, funders, and community stakeholders.
2. Financial Management & Fund Development
a. Oversee all financial operations, including budgeting, cash flow, forecasting, and reporting to the Board.
b. Manage day-to-day bookkeeping processes, including payroll (ADP), invoicing, purchasing, banking, and reconciliations, with support from a Bookkeeper.
c. Lead fundraising and development efforts, including grant writing, sponsorships, donor engagement, and membership growth. d. Build and maintain strong relationships with funders, donors, and community partners to support and grow Nanaimo Science’s impact.
3. Program Development & Quality Oversight
a. Oversee development, delivery, and evaluation of all science education programs, ensuring they are engaging, accurate, and aligned with our mission.
b. Support and mentor program staff to ensure high-quality, hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences.
c. Spearhead new initiatives and partnerships to expand programming and community impact.
d. Organize and oversee major events, including the annual Science Sunday Expo, showcasing Nanaimo Science and community collaborations.
4. Marketing, Communications & Community Relations
a. Promote Nanaimo Science programs and events through social media, newsletters, promotional materials, and community outreach.
b. Maintain and update Nanaimo Science’s website and registration platform (Amilia).
c. Foster and maintain relationships with local schools, organizations, and businesses to strengthen partnerships and visibility in the community.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills

  *   Degree in Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math, etc.) or Education, or a related field (graduate degree is an asset).
  *   Leadership and management experience in a non-profit, educational, or science- based organization.
  *   Experience with accounting principles, financial reporting, forecasting, budgeting, and payroll.
  *   Proven success in grant writing, fundraising, and partnership development.
  *   Passion for science education, community engagement, and inspiring youth.
  *   Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  *   Experience with program development, staff management, and hands-on science learning environments.
  *   Proficiency in Excel, Canva, Mailchimp, and social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram).
  *   Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions when needed (e.g., to cover programming when staff are unavailable).
  *   Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends for special events and programs.
  *   Valid Driver’s License and clean abstract preferred.
  *   Criminal Record Check required.

Compensation & Benefits
Permanent, full-time position (30–35 hours/week), with potential growth to 40 hours/week as the organization expands. Starting wage: $28–$30/hour, commensurate with experience. Employee Wellness Allowance in lieu of an extended health plan. Comprehensive, paid multi-week onboarding and transition period with the outgoing Executive Director to ensure a smooth leadership transition.
