Invertebrate Week at Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary (March 18-21, 2025)
It’s no-spine time! Celebrate the land, air, and water creatures who lack backbones!
Victoria, BC — Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary presents a series of educational and fun talks all about invertebrates – the amazing and diverse world of creatures who rely on exoskeletons or soft body tissues to compensate (and thrive!) without a spine!
Join us for daily workshops at 11:00 AM or 1:00 PM daily from local area experts, including:
“Bugs with Beth” Beth Lounds (Victoria Butterfly Gardens)
“Slugs and Slime” Emma Jane Vignola (CRD Regional Parks)
“Insect Puppets and their Fungal Magistrates!” Cara Gibson (Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary)
“Social and Solitary Bees” Alanna Morbin (Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary)
“Bug Keeping and Caring” Karlee Friesen (Victoria Bug Zoo)
“Earthworms “ Jeffrey Ellom (Compost Education Centre)
“Pond Dip for Aquatic Inverts” (outdoor) Andi Mazer (Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary)
Pre-registration is recommended for these presentations, drop-ins are also welcome. Additional invertebrate displays, crafts, and more will be available around the Nature House at Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary to enjoy! Check out our gift shop for nature-themed items, including Mason Bee cocoons, native plant seeds from our Seed Sower volunteer programs, and beautiful hand-crafted items by our Silver Swans volunteers.
Invertebrate Week is open to the public and great for kids and adults alike. Programs are free to attend, however we also greatly appreciate donations for attending these events ($8 per person suggested). Our Nature House is located at 3873 Swan Lake Road, Victoria, BC.

We acknowledge the lək ̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Esquimalt) Peoples on whose territory the Nature Sanctuary stands, and the lək ̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.
We respect the vital relationships of First Peoples with these lands and waters for countless generations. We are honoured to receive Indigenous guidance and welcome collaboration in stewardship and appreciation of the Nature Sanctuary.
