Speaker Series: A Métis Story
The Museum of Surrey aims to provide a platform to citizens of Métis Nation. Led by Brodie Douglas, discuss Métis identity, history and cultural awareness.
There are over 200 Indigenous and Aboriginal communities in British Columbia. While Métis Nation recognizes their Aboriginal status, they are not Indigenous to BC. How often are Métis peoples grouped with BC's First Nations communities? Métis Nation acknowledges that they are guests on this land. Métis Nation has a unique history and identity they are eager to share.
B.C.'s updated K-12 curriculum wasn't fully implemented until 2019 and, currently, only 5% of B.C. Students have completed any First People's courses. Métis First Nations focus is only found in four grades (Grade 4, 10, 11 and 12). But do these courses dive into Métis history, identity and differences from other Indigenous communities? After school, do museums, libraries, and public spaces continue to share Métis stories?
In 2025, several large corporations - including Meta, Walmart, Ford and McDonalds - are scaling back their DEI (Diversity, Equality and Inclusion) programs. While learning about and celebrating diverse cultures is crucial for fostering inclusivity in BC, there is growing resistance to these efforts globally. How can we, as individuals, make a meaningful difference? We can start by engaging respectful dialogue of Métis identity, history, and cultural awareness.

More About our Speaker: Brodie Douglas
Brodie Douglas was born in Merritt, BC with Metis ancestry going back to late 1790's in Manitoba. As many of us Metis are reconnecting with our history and identity, we need leadership that can clearly and knowledgeably talk about our history and who the Métis people are today. Metis History Matters.
Brodie spent 10 years working as a Metis historian within MNBC's Metis identification registry. This allowed him the opportunity to learn more about our Metis identity and to share our Metis history throughout the province. Spoken on the topic of Metis history and identity within all seven regions.
