*Invitation: Guru Nanak Jahaz Remembrance Day*
With reverence and resolve, we extend a formal invitation to join us
on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at 4:00 PM, in the Council Chamber at
Surrey City Hall
(13450 104 Avenue, Surrey BC V3T 1V8)
to mark Guru Nanak Jahaz Remembrance Day.
This solemn gathering commemorates the events of 1914, when the
steamship Guru Nanak Jahaz, named by Baba Gurdit Singh in honour of
Guru Nanak Sahib Ji, was turned away from Canadian shores under
racially exclusionary immigration laws.
Aboard were 377 Panjabis including 341 Sikhs, 24 Muslims, and 12
Hindus who endured weeks of confinement at Burrard Inlet before being
forcibly returned. Many faced fatal violence or imprisonment upon
their return to British India.
In 2025, under the leadership of Mayor Brenda Locke, the City of
Surrey officially recognized July 23 as Guru Nanak Jahaz Remembrance
Day, restoring the vessel’s sacred name to its rightful place in
Canadian civic memory.
The commemoration will include reflections, the official proclamation,
and a shared act of remembrance honoring the passengers’ moral courage
and the enduring contributions of those who carried this memory
forward to the heart of Canadian public life.
“*A name of deep spiritual and cultural meaning*.”
City of Surrey Proclamation 2025
We hope you will stand with us in remembrance and recognition.
With gratitude,
RSVP
