[BCMA] Invitation for professional museum educators to participate in a graduate research study

Hello BCMA Listserv,

My name is Elizabeth Underhill and I am a graduate student in the University of British Columbia’s Master of Museum Education program. In partial fulfillment of the requirements of this degree, I am conducting a research study entitled Museum Educators' Perspectives: Complicating Colonial Narratives in Canadian Heritage Museums, under the supervision of Dr. David Anderson, Director of the Master of Museum Education degree program at UBC Vancouver.

 About

The study will explore museum educators’ perspectives on implementing education practices in Canadian heritage museums that complicate settler colonial narratives. We are looking for examples of such education practices, including but not limited to youth programs, guest lectures, tours, interpretive planning, staffing and hiring, pedagogical approaches, etc. If this sounds like the work you do, we want to know more about your experience. Through these interviews we intend to formulate a set of recommendations that will support other museum educators with putting similar education practices into action at their own institutions.

Eligibility

Are you a professional museum educator working in a heritage museum in Canada? Do you have at least one year’s experience implementing education practices that complicate the settler colonial narrative at your current place of work? Are you fluent in English? If so, we’d love to get your perspective.

Time Commitment

The study will consist of a 60-minute semi-structured interview via Zoom. You will be sent the interview questions in advance and will have time following the interview to review the transcript and provide additional comments. This will require a commitment of approximately 80 – 100 minutes of your time. As a token of our gratitude for your contributions, a $25 gift card will be mailed to you at the completion of the study.
