About the Presentations

Amplifying Voices: Surrey Archives Oral History Project
Stacey Gilkinson, Archivist
City of Surrey

Launched in 2023 by Surrey Archives, the Amplifying Voices Oral History Project aims to preserve and honour the lived experiences of underrepresented communities in Surrey through community collaboration. So far, a total of eighteen oral histories have been recorded with 2SLGTBQ+, Japanese Canadian, and Indo-Fijian community members and advocates.

Weaving Voices - Oral History Projects at the Nikkei National Museum
Sherri Shinobu Kajiwara, Director/Curator
Nikkei National Museum

This presentation will cover the significance of oral histories to the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre. It offers several examples of completed oral history projects and ends with the most current Okaeri project. Threaded throughout is information on community engagement, grants, and lasting legacies. Questions about the process, challenges, and successes are encouraged during the Q&A session.

Many Voices: Rapport and Reciprocity
Kate Petrusa, Assistant Curator
Burnaby Village Museum

This presentation will cover the importance of making the most of your interviewer and interviewee’s valuable time. We’ll review tips on building rapport and reciprocity, but focus on ways to help your stakeholders care about the project as much as you do.

About Lower Mainland Curators Group

The Lower Mainland Curators Group (LMCG) was created in January 2019 for anyone with an interest in curatorial work, ideas, or themes in British Columbia.

The group is coordinated by a team of volunteer organizing members from museums around Metro Vancouver to discuss topics or themes related to curatorial work. It is for anyone with an interest in our sector including students, museum workers, and those in professions facing similar issues.

We present quarterly virtual and in-person sessions to discuss newly launched projects, share challenges and successes, and discuss lessons learned.
