Speaker Series: Safeguarding Chinese History
As opposition to colonialism grows, statues like Gassy Jack's have been forcibly removed, and institutions are re-examining their practices to include more diverse perspectives. How can we guarantee truthful and respectful storytelling? This session will examine how can we ensure the empowerment of Chinese Canadian history in British Columbia.

Denise Fong is a community-based researcher who has worked extensively on Chinese Canadian historical research since 2009. Her research has been featured in museum exhibitions, heritage plaques, educational resources, heritage commission reports, policy documents, books and documentary films.



Denise is the past research director of UBC's Initiative for Student Teaching and Research in Chinese Canadian studies<https://instrcc.ubc.ca/>. While completing her PhD at UBC, she co-curated two award-winning exhibitions - Burnaby Village Museum's Across the Pacific<https://www.burnabyvillagemuseum.ca/EN/main/what-s-on/exhibits.html> exhibition, and A Seat at the Table: Chinese Immigration and British Columbia<https://museumofvancouver.ca/a-seat-at-the-table> featured at the Museum of Vancouver and the Chinese Canadian Museum of BC. She is the lead author and researcher of Rooted: Chinese Canadian Stories in Burnaby<https://search.heritageburnaby.ca/link/museumlibrary7646> published by the City of Burnaby, and the co-author of Challenging Racist "British Columbia"<https://challengeracistbc.ca/>, 1923: Challenging Racisms Past and Present<https://challengingracism.ca/>.



She currently serves as the Curator of Urban Cultures at the Museum of Vancouver, and is a volunteer member of Richmond Museum's artifact advisory group.
