City of Surrey Job Posting: Community Services Assistant 3 - Heritage Services - Curatorial Assistant (YCW)
Scope

The City of Surrey is looking for an enthusiastic, collaborative, and creative Curatorial Assistant with the experience and drive to work amidst a dynamic civic artifact collection and community. With demonstrated experience in artifact handling and documentation, preventative conservation, and database systems, the Curatorial Assistant aids in facilitating community engagement through artifacts. Reporting to the Curator of Collections, the Curatorial Assistant is a key member of the team that manages the City’s Heritage Artifact Collections.

The City’s artifact collections consist of over 20,000 objects, housed and exhibited at the Museum of Surrey, Historic Stewart Farm, and other civic venues. The collections play a central role in the presentation, interpretation, and understanding of the City’s past, present, and future. The Curatorial Assistant assists in the organization and administration of the collections and works collaboratively to support access and use for exhibits, research, and programs. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate pursuing a career in Museums or Heritage.

Responsibilities

The Curatorial Assistant will:

  *   Photograph and document artifacts, maximizing the use of the Minisis database.
  *   Undertake analysis and reporting of collection and environmental monitoring conditions.
  *   Undertake primary and secondary source research.
  *   Facilitate collections access and use for exhibitions, research, and programming purposes.
  *   Support public access to collections via the online database: Surrey Online Heritage Search (SOHS).

Qualifications

This position is supported by Heritage Canada's Young Canada Works (YCW) Building Careers in Heritage. The position is contingent on Federal Government Grant funding. The successful candidate must meet the criteria set forth by the grant program, including:

  *   Canadian citizen or a permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible).
  *   Must be available to work the full duration of the grant sponsored position.
  *   Be a recent post-secondary graduate from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  *   Be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
  *   Registered on the Young Canada Works on-line candidate category.

Other qualifications:

  *   Current First Aid and CPR Certificate or acceptable equivalent (or able to attain this certification prior to the start of employment).
  *   Valid driver’s license, with a safe driving history.
  *   Strong planning and organizational skills.
  *   Experience in a cultural heritage facility, with training and experience in artifact handling and documentation, is considered an asset.

Other Information

Length of Assignment: October 10, 2023 - March 7, 2024

Days of Position: Tuesday – Saturday

Hours of Position:  9:00am – 4:00pm

Hourly Rate: $24.79

Conditions of Employment

This position requires completion of a Police Information Check including a Vulnerable Sector Check. Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
