Gallery Attendant

Kamloops Art Gallery is seeking a highly motivated person for the Admissions/Gallery Store area. The Gallery Attendant provides outstanding customer service in a multifaceted environment. Women, people of colour, Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities and people in the LGBTQIA2S+ community, and people from other historically excluded communities are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate is experienced in the retail industry, including point of sale systems; has excellent interpersonal skills and judgement; is an enthusiastic and quick learner; and is available to work a flexible schedule. A background or interest in the arts is an asset.

Hours will vary between 4 and 12 per week.

Job Description
Gallery Attendant

Job Purpose
The Gallery Attendant creates a welcoming experience for visitors to the exhibition galleries and Gallery Store. The Gallery Attendant responds to the needs and inquiries of visitors and provides a standard of excellence in the delivery of Gallery services and security through admissions, retail sales, events, and facility rentals.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

§  Provides information to visitors and the general public on exhibitions, programs, events, memberships, other gallery activities, and community events.
§  Opens and closes the exhibition galleries and the Gallery Store.
§  Monitors security cameras and physically inspects the exhibition galleries on a regular basis to ensure the safety of visitors, the artwork, and retail merchandise.

§  Welcomes all visitors to the Gallery and shares details re: exhibitions, store product, and other as per circumstance and visitor need.
§  Provides customers with product information.
§  Processes admissions, event and program registrations, donations, membership, and ticket sales.
§  Maintains attendance logs and prepares reports for the Visitor Services Manager.
§  Prepares sales reports and daily deposits.
§  Processes store purchases.
§  Receives and prepares merchandise for sale
§  Restocks products and supplies, and displays product as directed by the Gallery Store Coordinator or Visitor Services Manager.
§  Responds to safety and security incidents in the Gallery and shared public spaces and prepares incident reports.
§  Maintains the general appearance and cleanliness of the Store.

§  Provides support for Gallery on- and off-site events and facility rentals.

§  Performs inventory counts as requested.

§  Contacts donors and members to provide information on Gallery events and promotions.

§  Assists with Studio set up for programs and events.

§  Provides support as needed for mail outs and other tasks that may be required.


Relationships
The Gallery Attendant is the first point of contact for visitors attending exhibits or making purchases in the Gallery Store. They are responsible for ensuring that the environment is welcoming, inclusive, and safe. The key internal and external contacts for this position may include Board members, visitors, vendors, potential vendors, students, visiting artists, suppliers, renters, security guards, employees of neighbouring and community organizations, sponsors, tourists, and the general public.

In order to effectively perform their duties, the Gallery Attendant is required to work closely with all staff members.

The Gallery Attendant reports directly to the Visitor Services Manager.

Requirements
§  Previous experience in retail sales or a similar role.
§  Completion of high school diploma.
§  Completion of a certificate, diploma or degree in fine arts is considered an asset.
§  Previous experience with point of sale systems and transactions.
§  Basic understanding of sales principles and inventory management processes.
§  Proven ability to provide exceptional customer service.
§  Excellent communication skills, with an ability to be tactful and diplomatic.
§  Ability to perform under pressure and respond to safety and security issues when needed.
§  Ability to prepare reports and perform basic calculations.
§  Friendly and approachable demeanour with a strong customer service orientation.
§  Ability to be flexible and manage competing priorities.
§  Proficient with MS Office programs.
§  Ability to lift 25 lbs.
