[BCMA] I borrowed an exhibit idea...

Hi Tammy

I just curated an exhibition that opened on Saturday that is very similar to what you describe. We are celebrating 15 years at our current location. To celebrate we recruited 20 people who had a long time association with us at Touchstones – so former members of staff, volunteers, board members, exhibitors – to choose 1 object each from our Collection to feature in the display. The labels were written and display ideas were chosen by the individuals. We now have a display giving a cross section representation of our Collections from archival items such as newspapers, maps and photographs to artifacts such as a doll, artworks, a car number plate, a sternwheeler captain’s wheel and even a mystery box of teeth. The individuals chose something that was related to their personal interests or their time with the museum – often displayed, researched or donated the item. We had one non- indigenous individual who wished to display local indigenous stone tools. They worked with local indigenous individuals to display the item and write the text label.

We have also created a film where we showed the breadth of the objects in the collection stores and put some of the objects in the exhibition in their historic settings. I.E. a 1908 school desk in the classroom of the same school building today.

Thanks

JP

Thanks, Jana!

Tammy – I think there are probably several similar projects, but we did one to celebrate the centenary of UBC: 100 Years, 100 Treasures.

Our curators selected 100 (because of 100 years) treasures from our collections and members of the community were invited to choose one that spoke to them and write about it. These were compiled into a website https://beatytreasures.com/ What was wonderful was the diversity of styles of engagement: many people wrote short prose pieces, some deeply personal and some more object-centred, but we also had poetry, a tattoo and even an original song composition and performance! The public were then asked to vote on their favourite treasures and the top treasures were displayed in an in-museum exhibition.

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions!

[CAUTION: Non-UBC Email]
...and now I'm trying to remember who I "borrowed" it from!

I remember hearing, possibly a number of years ago now, of a museum somewhere in the province that created an exhibit by inviting members of the community to explore its collections, choose an object that resonated with them, and then present the object in a way that reflected the community member's own perspectives and experiences.

We have a 40th anniversary coming up here in Creston, and I'm thinking a similar approach could be a really good way of engaging with community members who may not have participated in the museum in the past, work with many different cultural groups, and look at our collections with new and non-colonial eyes.

I know this isn't my original idea - I'm definitely taking advantage of someone else's brilliance here. Now I'm wondering if any of you are that brilliant person and, if so, would you be willing to share some strategies and lessons learned with me?

Thanks!

Tammy
