Overview
The Curator leads the delivery of a broad range of art exhibitions and related programs for the Richmond Art Gallery. They ensure that all exhibits meet a high standard of excellence, are delivered on time and within budget, and connect with Richmond's diverse audiences.

The Richmond Art Gallery (RAG) is a nationally recognized contemporary municipal art gallery. RAG produces a broad range of artistic exhibitions and programs that connect, empower, and provoke conversation with our diverse communities. We are recognized for bringing artists and communities together through activities that include exhibitions, programs, publishing and collecting. RAG endeavours to be an active member of our Richmond community as a site to cultivate and foster critical and creative experimentation through community dialogue that is welcoming and inclusive of all people no matter their age or ability.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Leads the delivery of art exhibitions and related programs for the Richmond Art Gallery, and ensures that they meet a high standard of excellence, are delivered on time and within budget.
Takes an active role in the development of strategies across all program areas, including: collections, conservation, exhibitions, research, publications, performance, engagement and education.
Writes curatorial material for exhibitions, publications, articles and promotional material.
Supervises Exhibition Technicians through installation and take down of exhibitions.
Hosts, mentors and supports guest curators developing projects at the gallery.
Writes and prepares grant applications and/or assists in the preparation of grant applications as assigned by Director.
Identifies and oversees the presentation of touring exhibitions from other institutions.
Presents talks to the public, staff and board regarding RAG exhibitions.
Coordinates with the Director all matters related to the collection, including research, budget, maintenance, acquisitions, loan requests and conservation.
Works with volunteers and performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Broad knowledge of contemporary art and ability to work with diverse artistic and community groups with a demonstrated understanding of principles of diversity, equity and inclusion in programming, staff and audience experience.
Commitment to innovative programming and the proven ability to translate ideas into an ambitious exhibitions program that forges a strong connection to the local community and the art world at large.
Ability to develop and execute a sustainable multi-year program using a team approach to plan and produce complex, interdisciplinary programming.
Skill in managing substantial department, project and program budgets and deadlines.
Leadership ability including interpersonal, planning and organizational skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff.
Chinese (Mandarin/Cantonese) oral and written (Traditional/Simplified) language skills considered an asset.
Excellent verbal and communication skills.
Ability to successfully pass a criminal record check.

Qualifications and Experience:
Requires specialized knowledge and skills related to the areas of Art History and Cultural Studies, Studio Arts and/or Curatorial Studies, including contemporary art, interpretation and communication, research and writing.
Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree or additional equivalent combination of experience is preferred.
A minimum of five years professional museum/gallery experience in similar positions is required.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an office environment with studio visits which may involve some exposure to dust and chemicals.

Position Status: Regular Full-Time
Duration of Appointment:  N/A
Salary Range:  $43.09 - $50.88
Hours of Work:  Typical Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 8:15am - 5:00pm.
Flex Blocking System in Effect: This position is on a flexible-blocking schedule. Hours will be scheduled based on operational need and can include daytime, evening, weekdays and weekends shifts of varying lengths as each shift can be extended or shortened by moving blocks of time as required within the pay period. Day shifts will be scheduled if there is no operational need for evening and weekend work.
