Job Posting: Collections Intern (Young Canada Works)

About this opportunity: The BC Society for the Museum of Original Costume
(SMOC) was founded in 1992, to build a collection of historical fashion to
illustrate the lives and personal histories of people throughout Canada.
Our collection consists of thousands of items ranging in date from the
eighteenth century to the present day. SMOC is hiring a collections intern
for 40 hours a week from 1 September to 31 December 2021.

More information about the society can be found at our website: smoc.ca

The main objects for the intern are to:

1) Manage the current collection inventory

2) Catalogue items in the collection

3) Photograph items in the collection

4) Organize the collection storage space

5) Liase with the curator, volunteers, and board member

6) Provide regular updates for SMOCs social media pages and newsletter

This full-time internship at SMOC will provide the intern with hands-on
work experience in collections management and database recording. Working
with SMOC will also provide the intern with a unique view of how a museum
and a cultural organization operate with only volunteer assistance, and the
day-to-day mechanics of running a small cultural organization.

Qualifications and Experience: To be eligible for this position, you must
meet the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage program
criteria for internships (
https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/services/funding/young-canada-works/students-graduates/careers-heritage-graduates.html).
Ideally, you have graduated from a program in museum studies, art history,
social history, archaeology, or archival management. Equivalences, and
relevant work experience, will also be considered. An individual may be
eligible for a BCH internship if they:

• are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in
Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent
status are not eligible);

• are legally entitled to work in Canada;

• are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;

• are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;

• will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed
with the program;

• are unemployed or underemployed;

• are a college or university graduate; and

• are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with
the program.

Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously
participated in YCW internship programs.

You should have proficient computer skills, including the ability to use
word processing programs and email. Familiarity with spreadsheets such as
Excel would also be beneficial. Advanced English skills are required,
especially in written form, as is the ability to maintain accurate records.

You should be able to organize, plan, and manage your time effectively.
Since you will be working unsupervised at times, you must be a self-starter
and comfortable with making your own decisions.

You will need to think creatively to deal with spatial and organizational
difficulties, and take initiative to solve problems as they arise. At
times, you may be required to lift and move items in the collection and
therefore should be able to lift up to 20lbs comfortably.

SMOC’s collection is held in Vancouver, so you must be present in the city
to complete the internship. This is not a position that can be completed
remotely.

Length of position: 18 weeks

# of positions: 1

Hours/week: 40

Salary: $21/hr

To apply: Qualified candidates should email their cover letter, resume, and
three references (including email and phone numbers) as a single document

Applications must be received by 30 July 2021.
