Applications are currently being accepted from dynamic and committed individuals to fill an auxiliary  internship placement for the position Museum Assistant – Curatorial, Indigenous Content from approximately September 7, 2021 to January 28, 2022 (dates are subject to change dependent on funding). Salishan Place is a new arts, culture, and heritage centre that will be opening in 2023. Salishan Place will celebrate the diverse heritage of the Township of Langley, sharing the connections of the Katzie, Kwantlen, Matsqui, and Semiahmoo First Nations with their traditional territories since time immemorial. The Township was established on these lands in 1873.
Duties and Responsibilities
As an intern with the Arts, Culture and Community Initiatives Division of the Township of Langley, the successful incumbent will work on short-term projects for the Langley Museum.  Curatorial projects will involve working closely with local First Nations organizations and communities, and the Métis community, to develop exhibits and programs for Salishan Place that share about past and contemporary culture and life ways.  This position will involve handling Indigenous art and items of Indigenous cultural heritage held In Trust at the museum. The ideal candidate will have experience working with First Nations in BC, will have studied in a field relevant to the position, and will meet all criteria set out by the Young Canada Works program outlined below.
The Museum Assistant – Curatorial, Indigenous Content will support the following project goals:
·         Conduct research for exhibits and programs at Salishan Place
·         Identify potential Indigenous artworks and items of Indigenous cultural heritage that could be used in exhibits and programs at Salishan Place
·         Accession and photograph items and update records in the collection database
·         Assist with care and maintenance of collection items on display and in storage
·         Compile and summarize relevant reference materials on repatriation, reconciliation, decolonization, collections care, and moving forward together in a good way.
Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills required for this position include:
·         Computer skills, including knowledge and experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and collections database software
·         Excellent organizational, technical writing, research, and manual skills with demonstrated attention to detail
·         Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
·         Experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations, and demonstrated knowledge of Coast Salish and Métis culture
·         Previous experience in a museum environment is considered an asset
·         Must be physically fit - capable of lifting 35 lb. from floor to table height and 20 lb. from table to head height.
This position is being offered pursuant to a federally funded employment program.  Funding for the position is conditional on the applicant meeting the following criteria:
·         Be registered at the YCW Website
·         Currently a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, legally entitled to work in Canada
·         Between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
·         Willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment
·         Will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program
·         Currently unemployed or underemployed
·         College or university graduate
·         Have not previously participated in or been paid under this or any other Career Focus internship program funded under the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy.
